Tips For Planting a Full Scale Vegetable Garden
So You Want a Vegetable Garden?
A vegetable garden can be rewarding on many levels but it can also be ALOT of hard work! Here are some tips to consider
when planting your vegetable garden.
Consider what is involved before undertaking a full-scale vegetable garden. If you are aiming at self-reliance, the planting,
care, and harvesting of the produce will monopolize the time you spend outside.
It is impossible to estimate the ideal size for a vegetable garden area because there are many variables, such as what you want to grow and the time you have to tend to your garden. Zucchini, pumpkins and melons for example, need lots of room to spread out. So if you plan to include these, you will need a larger planting area. A vegetable garden that measures 3600 sq ft should meet the requirements of a family of four.
The labor required to tend to your Vegetable Garden is demanding, considerable time is needed to keep the garden fully productive and well maintained.
To be fully organic, you will need space and of course a compost system is important. The vegetables you grow organically are more expensive than non-organic crops.
Home-grown vegetables, however, are generally more wholesome than store bought veggies, especially when eaten straight from the garden. And since your garden was tended by you, you know how the produce was grown and handled, which adds an additional degree of safety.
Produce that can not be consumed immediately or in a short time span can be frozen or canned to enjoy during the rest of the year. Other vegetables and fruits such as potatoes, onions, and apples, can be dry stored.
The location of the Vegetable Garden will determine what plants will grow best.
The warmer the climate, the higher the crop yield. As you gain knowledge, learn from your mistakes, and enrich the soil, your garden will produce more and more. Always look at what other gardeners in your area are growing and achieving, and gain knowledge from their experience. But don’t be afraid to carry out your own experiments with new crops. You just may discover a new vegetable garden method that will be of benefit to you and others.

Kathy, your photos are making me hungry, and I really did have dinner tonight! I would love to have a garden, but apartment living puts the kibosh on that kind of activity. I love fresh fruit and veggies.

Hi Diane, I know it is hard when you live in and Apt. Do you have a balcony? You can do container gardening on a balcony or even in the house. My son is growing a lemon tree in his room in Alaska, just got his first lemon.
